The Upcoming 2022 San Bernardino County Election Cycle

The Upcoming 2022 San Bernardino County Election Cycle

For San Bernardino County’s upcoming 2022 election, sixteen people are seeking to fill seven of the County government elected positions which include:

San Bernardino County Sheriff;
San Bernardino County District Attorney;
San Bernardino County Treasurer;
San Bernardino County Assessor;
San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools;
San Bernardino County District 2 Supervisor;
and San Bernardino County District 4 Supervisor.

For District Attorney and Assessor, individuals already holding these positions do not have opponents, which must be pretty nice considering the total compensation packages for these two positions total the following:

Position Incumbent Total Annual Compensation
District Attorney Jason Anderson $475,395
County Assessor Bob Dutton $408,791

For current County Treasurer Ensen Mason, he must only get past one other candidate, to retain his seat in the office. In San Bernardino County, the Treasurer is also the auditor, the controller, and the tax collector, which brings his total annual compensation to the following:

Position Incumbent Total Annual Compensation
Treasurer Ensen Mason $454,469

But, the big question regarding Ensen Mason is: why is the county not segregating these duties into separate roles? Someone that is responsible for recording transactions, should not be reconciling these transactions, approving/authorizing them, having the custody of the assets, and auditing their validity. Yet, Mr. Mason is responsible for all through his role as Treasurer.

Current San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus was not properly elected into his current position, as he was appointed to the role last year. For this upcoming election, he is running against only one other individual, Cliff Harris. In San Bernardino County, the sheriff also is the County’s Chief Safety Officer, Coroner, and Public Administrator, which brings total annual compensation to the following:

Position Incumbent Total Annual Compensation
Sheriff Shannon Dicus $563,936

Current San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Ted Alejandre is running against only one other individual, Ken Larson. In San Bernardino County, the Superintendent of Schools receives the following compensation:

Position Incumbent Total Annual Compensation
Superintendent Ted Alejandre $381,591

In San Bernardino County’s Second District, Janice Rutherford’s final days are near after serving three full terms. Janice Rutherford was instrumental in the legal challenge that rejected the County’s Measure K vote for shorter term limits.

The Solution

The future success of this County relies heavily on the 2022 election as 7 out of the 10 highest top elected San Bernardino County offices are open, with the other 3 offices being San Bernardino County’s District 1,3, and 5 Supervisor positions that are voted on during the US presidential elections.
